Ann Grant
Ann is an attorney who knows divorce from both sides of the negotiating table. Before starting The Family Law Center of Southern California, Ann enjoyed a successful career as a partner at a major international law firm. Similar to the clients she now helps, her marriage came to a screeching stop, but her high-conflict divorce dragged on for five painstaking years. In the end, she not only survived, but learned how to thrive – and even went on to write a book about how to successfully untie the knot and write a new story.
I now use skills honed over several decades of practice to help my family law clients navigate legal minefields and outsmart the system, so that they can get to a new and better life as fast as possible – with their sanity intact and money in the bank. Whenever possible, I attempt to resolve matters without resorting to litigation, as this approach generally makes for a less expensive and disruptive divorce. When litigation is in a client’s best interest, I have the skills and tools to achieve their goals. After years of litigating, I know how to get things done and when to go to court.
It gives me great pleasure to use my skills to help clients not just survive divorce, but thrive. I’ve been there and I know how difficult the divorce process can be – even as an attorney! Beyond supporting clients in their legal issues, I enjoy working through the nonlegal issues that arise when going through a major life transition. My own experience made me deeply sensitive to the fact that clients need to be addressed as a whole person: I consider their goals and aspirations as we work together to get their life on track. I have created a network of professionals which includes financial advisors, divorce coaches, real estate agents, and mental health professionals that work together to assist my clients in every area of their lives as they move through this significant life transition.
Education
I received my Juris Doctorate degree from the University of San Diego School of Law where I graduated cum laude in 1991. While there, I served as Editor of the San Diego Law Review. I obtained my undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in 1984. I am the former editor of The Woman Advocate Newsletter, the official publication of the Woman Advocate Committee of the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association.
Prior Legal Experience
I began my legal practice at the law firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky, & Walker, LLP in 1991. Later, I joined Howrey & Simon’s Los Angeles office where I practiced as a corporate litigator from 1993 until 2004. I was a partner in the complex business litigation department and represented plaintiffs and defendants in matters involving class action lawsuits and litigation involving a wide variety of contract disputes, unfair business practices, and consumer fraud. I litigated complex antitrust matters and tried high-profile white collar criminal defense cases and patent infringement cases. After I left Howrey, I taught law school at Southwestern University in Los Angeles. I am licensed to practice in front of all courts in the State of California, as well as the federal courts in the Ninth Circuit.
Pursuits & Passions
I started my own law firm in Manhattan Beach in 2008, where I currently focus exclusively on family law. I am the author of The Divorce Hackers Guide to Untying the Knot, which ranked as a #1 new release on Amazon in 2018, as well as the creator of the DivorceHacker App. I am also one of the founding members of the Onlife Foundation – a nonprofit created to support young adults in recovery. Finally, I am a mother of two wonderful adult children who have also gone from surviving to thriving alongside me. In my free time I enjoy yoga, meditation, retreats, podcasting, traveling, and writing.
